Comcast to Split in Two, Spinning Off NBCUniversal and Sky

In a massive shakeup of the media landscape, Comcast has announced it will break itself into two separate, publicly traded companies.

The cable and media giant said Monday it will spin off its entertainment assets—including NBCUniversal, Sky, and its theme parks—into a new standalone media company, while retaining its broadband and wireless businesses under the Comcast name.

Investors cheered the move, sending Comcast shares up 21% in premarket trading.

Who Gets What?

The New NBCUniversal (SpinCo):

  • NBC and Sky networks
  • Universal theme parks
  • Universal film and TV studio
  • Cable networks (USA, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, Golf Channel)
  • CNBC and MSNBC
  • Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes

Comcast (Remaining Company):

  • Xfinity internet and cable
  • Xfinity Wireless
  • Comcast Business services

Why Break Up?

Comcast says the tax-free split allows each business to "pursue its own strategy, invest for growth and create shareholder value."

Wall Street analyst Adam Crisafulli explained it simply: Comcast shares have been dragged down by worries about the declining cable and broadband business. Separating the high-growth entertainment assets could unlock value—and give NBCUniversal more flexibility to make deals and acquire other companies.

However, he warned: "Worries about the broadband business outlook won't go away, and if anything, this deal will leave that unit more exposed."

Who Will Run the New Companies?

  • Mike Cavanagh (current co-CEO) will become CEO of the new NBCUniversal.
  • Michael Angelakis (former Comcast CFO) will become CEO of the remaining Comcast. He'll serve as a strategic adviser in the meantime.
  • Brian Roberts (chairman and co-CEO) will stay actively involved in leading both companies.

Comcast will retain a 19.9% ownership stake in NBCUniversal.

What's Next?

The transaction is expected to take about 12 months to complete. It follows a previous move in November 2024, when Comcast spun off several cable networks into a separate entity—a step that now looks like a precursor to this full breakup.

Trump’s Face Is Now on U.S. Passports—But There’s a Catch

A new limited-edition U.S. passport featuring President Donald Trump’s image has been unveiled to commemorate America’s 250th birthday—but securing one requires a pilgrimage to Washington D.C. and a personal appearance.

What’s Inside the New Design?

The redesigned passport pages include a striking image of Trump seated at the Resolute Desk, fists planted, with the Declaration of Independence looming in the background. His signature appears below in bold black ink—a first for a sitting U.S. president on a passport.

The White House has branded the document a "patriot passport," while Trump himself promoted it on Truth Social with the slogan: "Welcome, but be good!"—though eagle-eyed observers noted that phrase doesn’t actually appear anywhere on the pages he shared.

How to Get One (and Why It’s Tricky)

If you’re hoping to snag one of these commemorative documents, here’s the fine print:

  • No online or mail applications—you must apply in person.
  • Only at the Washington D.C. passport agency or at special acceptance events (currently just two are listed, both in D.C.).
  • Available starting July 6, while supplies last.

It remains unclear whether applicants at the D.C. agency can opt out of the special edition if they prefer the standard design, which features historical scenes like the Apollo moon landing and the Statue of Liberty.

A Pattern of Presidential Branding

This passport is far from an isolated stunt. The Trump administration has been systematically imprinting the president’s name and likeness across federal institutions:

  • Federal buildings and websites have been rebranded with Trump’s name.
  • A commemorative gold coin featuring Trump is being minted by the U.S. Mint for the 250th anniversary.
  • Trump will become the first sitting president to have his signature on U.S. banknotes.
  • Earlier plans to add his name to the Kennedy Center were briefly implemented before being removed.
  • He has also proposed building a massive "Arc de Trump"—a triumphal arch in Washington modeled after Paris’s Arc de Triomphe.

Why It Matters

For supporters, it’s a celebratory nod to presidential leadership during a historic milestone. For critics, it raises questions about the blending of national symbols with personal branding—and whether a passport, which represents all Americans abroad, should carry the face of a living politician.

Either way, the "patriot passport" is a collector’s item that many will want—but only a fortunate few will actually hold in their hands.

Bottom line: If you want one, you’ll need to book a trip to D.C., stand in line, and hope supplies last. And if you’re not a fan? You might just have to wait for the next administration to redesign things again.
