Comcast to Split in Two, Spinning Off NBCUniversal and Sky
In a massive shakeup of the media landscape, Comcast has announced it will break itself into two separate, publicly traded companies.
The cable and media giant said Monday it will spin off its entertainment assets—including NBCUniversal, Sky, and its theme parks—into a new standalone media company, while retaining its broadband and wireless businesses under the Comcast name.
Investors cheered the move, sending Comcast shares up 21% in premarket trading.

Who Gets What?
The New NBCUniversal (SpinCo):
- NBC and Sky networks
- Universal theme parks
- Universal film and TV studio
- Cable networks (USA, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, Golf Channel)
- CNBC and MSNBC
- Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes
Comcast (Remaining Company):
- Xfinity internet and cable
- Xfinity Wireless
- Comcast Business services
Why Break Up?
Comcast says the tax-free split allows each business to "pursue its own strategy, invest for growth and create shareholder value."
Wall Street analyst Adam Crisafulli explained it simply: Comcast shares have been dragged down by worries about the declining cable and broadband business. Separating the high-growth entertainment assets could unlock value—and give NBCUniversal more flexibility to make deals and acquire other companies.
However, he warned: "Worries about the broadband business outlook won't go away, and if anything, this deal will leave that unit more exposed."

Who Will Run the New Companies?
- Mike Cavanagh (current co-CEO) will become CEO of the new NBCUniversal.
- Michael Angelakis (former Comcast CFO) will become CEO of the remaining Comcast. He'll serve as a strategic adviser in the meantime.

Comcast will retain a 19.9% ownership stake in NBCUniversal.

What's Next?
The transaction is expected to take about 12 months to complete. It follows a previous move in November 2024, when Comcast spun off several cable networks into a separate entity—a step that now looks like a precursor to this full breakup.
